Wonderful article found via LISNews (http://www.lisnews.org/) about productive reading:

What makes a productive reader?
1. Commit to making at least three changes in your life as a result of your reading.
2. Create to-do lists as you read, instead of notes.
3. When you’re done, give the book away, so someone else can learn from it.
Of course, these apply to reading for information, not necessarily pleasure reading, although I must admit to being a bit of a list maker when I read for pleasure.
The article makes some other helpful recommendations:
1. Use an index card as your bookmark.
2. Keep a reading journal.
3. Teach it.
4. Talk about it.
5. Google it.
6. Pay attention to the structure of what you are reading.
These are useful tips for everyone and I certainly believe could be used for all types of reading, whether its a novel or a professional article one is reading for work.
