As my current job duties are being eliminated (err...transferred to others), I am gaining more time to seriously think and ponder my upcoming roles. I was able to carve out a couple of hours yesterday to read and write. It was sheer bliss. Here is my list (in no particular order, mind you) of some tasks I want to tackle when I finally get to start my new job:
- Conduct an analysis of our current collection
- Develop and conduct a user needs assessment (primarily with faculty)
- Develop an acquisitions workflow with IDS
- Re-do collection development policy (it is soooo hopelessly out-of-date - 1991 I think...).
- Develop a systematic weeding and deselection program - the stacks are brimming and closed storage is running out-of-room
- Write a new lost books policy. Can you believe we charge $70 for ANY type of lost item? Even for paperbacks. It is insane and causes too many problems.
- Develop a web form for the notification of new books into the library - we have the RSS feed for new books, but I want to create a notification that gets sent by email to the patron. Currently when a faculty member puts in a purchase request, and indicates they want to be notified, when the new book comes in , the notification is printed off, given to reference and a student assistant MANUALLY emails each faculty member that the book is here. Mind you, we don't put the book on hold for them, we just TELL them the new book is in the library. Its arcane and silly.
- Restructure current academic liaison program. There is no liaison program essentially.
- Work with Cyril and the SUNY CCD committee to develop Geneseo's role in the cooperative collection development agreement
- Work with the Collection Development teams
- Assess and modify (if needed) acquisitions workflow
Ambitious? Yes, but its all necessary. The next four months are my time for figuring out how to do it...
I've worked on a lot of these issues at 2 different libraries -- and am still working on a bunch of them -- and would be thrilled to help you brainstorm, share some lessons, and hear your new ideas. Keep me in mind when you're ready for a sounding board!
